Who do you help? The purpose of Davis Dyslexia Correction® Programs is to empower children and adults who experience difficulties with reading, writing, math, language, and attention/focus. They gain a new understanding of their personal thinking and perceptual processes; learn self-help methods for controlling perceptions; develop skills for eliminating confusions regarding language symbols; and gain a new found sense of self-esteem.
How can the Davis Programs help? Davis Programs are based on the finding that many individuals who exhibit learning disability symptoms have a natural ability to alter their mental and physical perceptions. They can use this perceptual ability to facilitate creativity, improve physical performance, enhance thinking, or resolve confusions. However, when they attempt to use this same ability to resolve confusions regarding language symbols, it can cause unwanted perceptual distortions and noticeable disorientations that affect vision, hearing, balance, motor skills, time sense, and speech.
Individuals who possess and use this thinking style can be shown how to control their perceptions so disorientation no longer interferes with their ability to learn. During programs, clients gain experience using this skill as they begin to clear up many of their basic confusions regarding letters, words, numbers and other language symbols. They also learn to use special study skills uniquely adapted to their way of learning, thinking, perceiving and controlling focus.
How does this work? Davis programs are comprehensive, allowing the student to gain improvements in all areas of development: physical, intellectual, social, and emotional. These four areas of human development are intertwined, meaning that the strengths or weaknesses of one area will directly affect the strengths or weaknesses of the other areas. Imagine how doubly exciting it is for the child who completes a program week with significantly increased reading skills, but now can also catch a ball or jump rope for the first time! Davis programs have the power to fuel the total child, not just one’s academic struggles.
Davis Programs are not a substitute for other effective educational or therapeutic programs a person may need. Nor is it a cure for learning disabilities. What they do provide is knowledge and experience with self-help tools. These tools, when used, will unlock a person’s learning potentials, as well as accelerate and enhance the effectiveness of other forms of assistance.
How do I know if this will work for me or my child? To ensure that the programs will be effective and beneficial, potential clients must first be evaluated for certain perceptual abilities and academic achievements. The evaluation also takes into account how aware they are of their learning difficulties and their level of motivation to correct them. Maturity is a factor in these qualifications, so children under 8 may not qualify** (see enclosed description of the Davis® Reading Program for Young Learners).
What does the program look like? All counseling is done on a one-to-one basis designed to fit the individual needs of a particular client. Generally, the initial Davis Dyslexia Correction® Program includes all or most of the following:
Tools, techniques, and procedures are unique and differ from traditional classrooms
Clay is one of the main mediums used, allowing the child to use natural strengths of creativity, artistry, and visual-spatial thought processes
Student work is hands-on with ownership of the strategies transferred to the student
Student learns to view his surroundings in an oriented state (focused), thus allowing him to see, hear, and feel exactly what is there, not what is thought to be there
Mastery of confusing letters, symbols, numbers and words
Reading and/or math enhancement
Spelling and handwriting improvement strategies
Speech and hearing skills
Balance and coordination improvement
Program is intensive, but fun, and presented in 5 consecutive days (Exception: Young Learner’s Program encompasses shorter sessions across a longer time length)
Students resolve numerous confusions before week’s end, allowing them to return to the classroom the following week with new strategies and skills to better achieve academic success
The Davis program provides activities that reach beyond intellectual growth only. Every program provides further developmental growth of the physical, emotional, and social areas, as well
Client receives a kit of resource materials to take home for continued work
Support Training for parents, teachers, or tutors
Accommodation recommendations to aid with transitioning back into a school environment
Six additional follow-up hours included with program package
Email and phone consultations included with program package
The Program Schedule, Hours, and Break: * Each program requires a minimum of 30 hours of attendance by the client, and 4-8 hours by a family member. These hours are generally scheduled over 5 consecutive days, 6 hours a day. The usual schedule for the client is Monday through Friday, with daily hours of 9:00 – 12:00 and 1:00 – 4:00. * Six hours of Post-Program Review is included in the cost of the initial Davis Dyslexia Correction® Program and are in addition to the previous program hours. Additional Post-Program Davis® Symbol Mastery Tutoring is available on a fee for service basis. * Short breaks, at least once an hour, are an essential part of the Davis Programs. They are necessary for preventing stress, learning the value of backing off when overly confused, and celebrating successes. These times are best used for walks, games, puzzles, short rests, and snacks. * It is recommended that you bring along healthy snacks and drinks. We suggest keeping sugary foods to a minimum. A refrigerator is available. * We do not have supervised lunch periods, so please make any needed arrangements for yourself and your child during this time.
Physical Requirements: * We recommend that clients eat regularly and get enough sleep to ensure good mental alertness while doing Davis Programs. * Drugs, alcohol, and some medicines, can interfere with the effectiveness of programs. Therefore, we ask that any current medications be disclosed in advance and that clients refrain from alcohol during Programs. We do not advise that any prescribed medications be discontinued without a medical doctor’s approval. * Any pains, illnesses, or discomforts, either physical or emotional that occur during programs should be reported to your facilitator immediately.
Support Persons & Support Training: * Support persons may be a parent, spouse, grandparent, tutor, teacher et al. Support persons are welcome to learn and observe phases of Davis Programs in order to better help a client after their program. * Parents of children doing a program need to be present Monday morning for registration and initial interviews. They also need to be present for support training and post-program recommendations on Friday. * Participants observe modeling of skills, engage in hands-on activities, and gain knowledge of how to guide student at home with new skills
Post-Program Review and Symbol Mastery Skill Sessions: Davis Programs are an intensive intervention which begin a journey of successful life-long learning. Positive change and improvement in basic skills are expected during programs. However, after the program, there is still the need to master words and concepts and continue to use Symbol Mastery to ensure post-program progress. The Symbol Mastery Kit is provided which contains the materials needed for this work. Symbol Mastery is vital for sustaining and continuing progress. * Additional Symbol Mastery Skill Sessions are available at Minnesota Learning Solutions once the six hours of Post-Program Review are completed. This service is offered through our Formal Follow-Up Program on an optional basis at an additional per hour charge. The intent of Minnesota Learning Solutions Formal Follow-Up Program is to compliment and not to replace the client’s efforts at home, school, or work environment. * Academic tutoring after a Davis Program is highly recommended in order to remediate existing gaps and weaknesses in basic skills, and to improve academic performance. This will help maintain the pace of academic and personal improvement experienced during a program. Individual academic tutoring is available at Minnesota Learning Solutions. * Clients and support persons are encouraged to call and/or email whenever there are any questions regarding Orientation or Symbol Mastery skills. Unlimited phone and/or email consultations are part of all Minnesota Learning programs and services.
Expected Results: *Ability to control disorientations and perceptual distortions intentionally. *Improved ability to maintain and focus attention. *Reduction of learning disability symptoms. * Improved ability to read, study, and learn. *Greater confidence, personal awareness, and self-confidence.
